Background

So I am starting the journey towards ownership of my first electric car. I've been promising myself for some time that my next car would be electric. My requirements were a "normal" looking car, 100+ miles range, and a cost of less than US$50,0000 -- yes a lot of money for a car. I have the resources and I think that electric cars are the future. Since our government has not helped/pushed the industry towards electric cars (we will see what Obama will do), then it is up to individuals to create a market for such vehicles -- as futile as that sounds.

I've been reading a lot about electric cars for some time. My wife has a Toyota Prius and I have a Civic Hybrid in an attempt to (again) improve the market for high efficiency vehicles which use less oil and there fore put less money in the coffers of terrorists, release less carbon into the atmosphere, and pollute less. Electric cars are even more efficient with no point carbon or pollution. Before you say that all I am doing is transferring the pollution from the tailpipe to the smokestack of the power company, experts estimate that electric vehicles are at the worst the same as gasoline engines but since there are 10 thousands of power stations and 100 millions of cars so our ability to regulate and control the emissions is significantly improved by 5 orders of magnitude. Electric cars do not get more polluting as they age (as opposed to their gas counterparts). In addition, electric cars reduce our dependence on foreign oil which will be significantly more healthy for our economy and national security. Lastly, what I like about all electric systems is that we have choices. We have our choice of electric technologies to invest in: wind, solar, hydro-electric, geothermal, fission, fusion. With gas, we have no choice but support the oil oligarchies of the world.

I've been watching with great interest discussions about the Chevy Volt and other range-extended electric cars and plug-in hybrids which will give their owners some miles of pure electric driving. I think these are the precursor to the full electric vehicle which is 10 years away or so. Some advancements in battery technology and charging speeds will bring the price, range, and re-charging time performance down to within bounds as soon as there is a market enough to support the R&D investments. But most of these cars are in the "future" column with promises of 2011 or later production runs. I want one now.

Enter EV Innovations (was Hybrid Technologies) based out of Las Vegas, with their development office in of Mooresville, NC. They take a number of different car models and convert them to be full EVs. After hearing about them online somewhere, I did a bunch of research and settled on their conversion of the Toyota Yaris.

Other Electric Cars Houses

Here are links to other folks out there like me who have electric vehicles. For now I'm going to limit this list to what I'll call "normal" cars. Although there are people doing their part to be clean and gas-free, my advocacy is for EVs that people can drive with little to no limitations. The stigma of EVs as clown or micro cars needs to be ended. Please send me mail to have yourself added to the list.
