[ Part of how to label your pages with PICS meta tag. ]
The Recreational Software Advisory Council used to be a semi-standard but was folded into ICRA in 1999 and should no longer be used. Basically, their ratings are a list of codes each with a letter and a digit. The starting letter inticates the type and is (l)anguage, (n)udity, (s)ex, and (v)iolience. The digit is a rating of how explicit the content is with 4 being the most, 1 the least, and 0 implying no content.
So if you page uses crude words, shows frontal nudity, shows passionate kissing, and shows destruction of objects, your RSAC rating code would be:
l4 n4 s1 v2
The full ICRA PICS meta tag would then be:
<meta http-equiv="pics-label" content='(PICS-1.1 "http://www.rsac.org/ratingsv01.html" labels ratings (l4 n4 s1 v2))' />
Notice that you set a level of nudity and other types. You would not use l1 and l4 but just l4.
There are tables which compare the RSAC and the ICRA ratings in the ICRA page.
Level | Violence Rating Descriptor | Nudity Rating Descriptor | Sex Rating Descriptor | Language Rating Descriptor |
---|---|---|---|---|
4 | Rape or wanton, gratuitous violence | Frontal nudity (qualifying as provocative display) | Explicit sexual acts or sex crimes | Crude, vulgar language or extreme hate speech |
3 | Aggressive violence or death to humans | Frontal nudity | Non-explicit sexual acts | Strong language or hate speech |
2 | Destruction of realistic objects | Partial nudity | Clothed sexual touching | Moderate expletives or profanity |
1 | Injury to human being | Revealing attire | Passionate kissing | Mild expletives |
0 | None of the above or sports related | None of the above | None of the above or innocent kissing; romance | None of the above |
