John D. MacDonald Quotes
The Green Ripper (1979)
From the Travis McGee Series
- In the meantime, [he] had succumbed to the age of the jock.
They mystique of pushing yourself past your limits. The age of shin
splints, sprung knees, and new hernias. An office-softened body in
its middle years needs a long, long time to come around. Until a man
can walk seven miles in two hours without blowing like a porpoise,
without sweating gallons, without bumping his heart past 120, it is
asinine to start jogging...
Being in shape means knowing your body, how it feels, how it
responds to this and to that, and when to stop. You develop a sixth
sense about when to stop. It is not mysticism. It is brute labor,
boring and demanding. Violent exercise is for children and
knowledgeable jocks. Not for insurance adjustors and sales managers.
They do not need to be in the shape they want to be, and could not
sustain it if they could get there. Walking briskly no less than six
hours a week will do it for them.
- When you see the ugliness behind the tears of another person,
it makes you take a closer look at your own.
- We are all at the mercy of the scriptwriters, directors, and
actors in cinema and television. Man is a herd creature, social and
imitative. We learn the outward manifestations of inner stress,
patterning reaction to what we have learned. And because the visible
ways we react are so often borrowed, we wonder about the truth of what
is happening underneath. Do I really feel pain, grief,
shock, loss? It is as if we look inside and take a tentative rap at
some bell that hangs in there.
- The world was all tied together in some mysterious tangle of
invisible web, single strands that reach impossible distances,
glimpsed but rarely when the light caught them just right.
- Being an adult means accepting those situations where no
action is possible.
- Killing is such an ancient taboo. Only freaks ever adjust to
killing people they have known and talked to, except when it is to
save their own lives. Discipline enabled uniformed people to kill
unseen strangers. Children can imitate something seen on television,
but the aftershock can be deadly. I had killed before, and it has
never ceased being a wrenching psychic trauma.
- Customs and Immigration are in a sense token services. Any
plausible-looking person can find many ways to come and go unimpeded.
Anything that can be flown or floated can be brought in or taken out.
We are a wide place in the road in the middle of the world, and they
wander through, back and forth, marveling at the lack of restraints.
It is ... a paradox. The openness which endangers our system is the
product of the policy which says that to close our borders and enforce
all our rules and back them up with guns would change the system just
as completely as any alien force.
- Not one of us ever grows up to be what he intended to be. Not
one of us fulfills his own expectations... We are all our own
children, in that sense. At some point, somewhere, we have to stop
making demands.
- A fanatic is a person who redoubles his effort when he has
forgotten his original aim.
